Welcome to 2012!

This year, we're changing the way University of Waikato students log in to Lightwire. Previously, students had to create a separate Lightwire account and link it to their UoW username. As of today, University of Waikato users can simply log in to Lightwire directly with their University of Waikato username and password.

New users don't have to do anything to get set up. Just log in either on your personal device, on a lab computer, or through the "Manage My Account" page with your University of Waikato username and password. Your Lightwire account will be created automatically and if you're eligible for the free 1.5GB student quota it will be applied straight away.

Your Lightwire password will stay in sync with your University of Waikato password, so whenever you change your password at Uni, it will change for Lightwire too.

Existing students may find their passwords have changed to their University of Waikato password. Students who had linked their accounts to their personal Lightwire account should be able to continue to use their personal or their UoW account, but they will be treated as the same account. Some accounts with links may have had their link removed if there was another account existing with the same name.

If you're having issues logging in, please call our helpdesk on 0800 12 13 14 and we'll get you sorted out.

The University of Waikato is currently experiencing problems with its connections to KAREN (the New Zealand research network) which Lightwire uses to provide free data to Google and its services. Rather than making all Google sites and services become unavailable, Lightwire has automatically redirected this traffic out its main Internet connection.

This means that traffic to Google is currently being charged for in the same way as normal traffic you do. This will continue until the KAREN connection is restored.

This will also put extra load on the Lightwire Internet connection which may cause slightly degraded user experience until the connection is restored.

This year has started with a real rush for Lightwire. Thanks to everyone who has started using Lightwire so soon. In fact, the rate at which you have all started using Lightwire has caught us a little by surprise. As such, you may have noticed that during peak times Lightwire has got a bit slower to use than we would like.

We are busy working with our upstream international bandwidth supplier to increase how much traffic we can access from Lightwire. We hope this upgrade will be in place in the next week or so. In the mean time, please accept our apologies. We'll make sure once the new bandwidth is in place that we have some interesting new specials to help thank you for your patience.

Also, the international bandwidth restriction should not ever effect the performance of the Lightwire website, University of Waikato content or most New Zealand locations. If you are seeing issues connecting to these sites, the problem lies in the University network that you use to connect to Lightwire. Please feel free to contact the Lightwire team via twitter, facebook, e-mail or phone to report these access problems and we will work with ITS to ensure that they are corrected if possible.

We're pleased to announce that as of today, Google hosted services are FREE when you access them on Lightwire at the University of Waikato. This means you get free access to Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar and much more as long as you're logged in to Lightwire at the University of Waikato.

We've worked with the University to hook Lightwire up to KAREN, the Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network. Google provides high-speed access to their services over KAREN which means you'll get free access as long as Google continues to advertise their services to KAREN.

We'll let you know if Google changes the way they provide services over KAREN or if our arrangement with the University changes. Until then you can enjoy free and fast access to Google services on Lightwire at the University of Waikato.
